The Setting Sun presents a Japan that has lost its sense of identity as its population tries to pick up the pieces after the end of the second world war. It is a setting that has the sense of being in flux, but not in a positive way.

Donald Lawrence Keene (June 18, 1922 – February 24, 2019) was an American-Japanese translator, scholar, and writer. Keene was a Professor Emeritus of Japanese Literature at Columbia University, and published nearly fifty books in both Japanese and English. He held a doctorate in Japanese literature, fourteen honorary degrees, and numerous awards for his work. In 2011, he immigrated from America to Japan.
