Shulamith Firestone

(January 7th, 1945 – August 28th, 2012)

Shulamith Bath Shmuel Ben Ari Firestone (née Feuerstein) was a Canadian-American radical feminist author and activist. She wrote books, founded three feminist organizations, participated, organized, and led protests, and was a prominent figure in second-wave feminism.

Her best known work is The Dialectic of Sex from 1970.

Firestone was diagnosed with schizophrenia and struggled with her mental health for her entire life. She was cared for by friends and community for some time before that support disbanded. Firestone was left without regular care at the end of her life and was found dead in her apartment on August 28th, 2012.
