Lucy Grealy

(June 3rd, 1963 – December 18th, 2002)

Lucinda Margaret Grealy was an Irish-American poet and memoirist, best known for her work writing about identity. Her memoirs famously looked at her experience of having a rare and difficult to treat cancer of the jaw in childhood that isolated her from her peer group, put her through many surgeries, and left her with some facial disfigurement. Ann Patchett was a close friend of hers in adulthood.
